April Newsletter2nd Grade Mrs. Shaughnessy
Spelling- We are still doing a 15 word list and the words are becoming more challenging. We will be working on contractions, words with –ed and –ing, –tion and –ture, and suffixes –ness and -less. Keep practicing at home as much as possible. Have your child write the words and spell them orally. A website called “Spelling City” is also accessible through my school web page.
Reading- Thanks again for having your child read to you at home and returning the slips. We will be working on: fact/opinion, drawing conclusions, summarizing, cause and effect, and reading to improve fluency. I would like your child to be reading around 89 words per minute. The class loves reading and using my one-minute timers. They reread the same passage to see if their fluency (rate of speed when reading) increases. I bet they would love showing you at home as well using a timer. It is important for students to be fluent readers because it usually helps them understand/comprehend the material they are reading more easily.
Phonics-. Contractions, words with –ed and –ing, –tion and –ture, and suffixes –ness and -less.
Grammar- Quotation marks, commas, writing complete sentences, writing paragraphs pertaining to one subject area.
Math- Customary Length: Measuring in feet, comparing lengths in feet, measuring in inches, comparing lengths in inches, and real word problems using customary length. Remember my website has lots of resources to practice with. This program and a similar one called “Rocket Math” is used in schools all over the country and we are using two. It is really important that your child memorizes these math facts.
Social Studies- How communities grow and change
Mystery Science- Water, River, and Sand.
Spring Break- Wednesday April 12-Monday April 17. School resumes on Tuesday, April 18.
