March Newsletter
Mrs. Shaughnessy
Phonics/Spelling- Words with kn,wr,gn, and mb, /f/sound spelled ph, gh, ff, ffe; vowel sound in fall spelled aw, au, augh, and al, contractions, ed and ing endings. We are still doing a 15 word list with dictation and the words are becoming more challenging. Keep practicing at home as much as possible. Have your child write the words and spell them orally. Having your child write them in cursive is a nice change as well. They usually like writing in cursive.
Reading- Thanks again for having your child read to you at home and returning the slips. We will be working on: fact/opinion, drawing conclusions, summarizing, cause and effect, and reading to improve fluency. The class practices reading with a one-minute timer and a partner. They really like trying to improve their fluency. Right now, I would like your child to be reading around 82 words a minute.
Grammar- Pronouns (I, she, he, we, they, him, her, us, them, it, you), contractions
Writing- Staying with a topic, main idea/details, sequence (first, next, etc.), organizing ideas/thoughts
Math- Counting money, comparing amounts of money, and word problems with money. Keep going over addition subtraction and addition facts. Remember you can get all of our practice worksheets on line using the address at the bottom and my teacher website has many practice web sites as well.
Cursive- Lower Case cursive letters. Please practice at home. It takes time and practice for the cursive “flow” to become more natural.
Science- Our planet, sun, and stars
Field Trip- Field trip to Hult Health Center on Wednesday, March 22 (morning only, no chaperones)
Half Day- Friday, March 24 for Teacher Inservice:dismissal at 11:30
Report Cards- March 20
