December Newsletter 2nd Grade
Mrs. Shaughnessy
Christmas/Holiday Party- Friday, December 19 from 10-11. I sent a reminder home for the parents who signed up for this party. Dismissal is at 2:05 that day to kick off Christmas Break. School resumes on Tuesday, January 6.
Gift Exchange: Each girl/boy should bring a wrapped gift valued at about $3.00-$5.00 that is appropriate for another girl/boy in the classroom for the Christmas party (girls bring girl gifts and boys bring boy gifts). If you want to send them to school early, that is fine. Please make sure there is a tag on it stating whom it is from.
Spelling/Phonics- Long o using o, oa, and ow., compound words, Long I using i,igh, and y. Keep practicing at home as much as possible. Have your child write the words and spell them orally. They also think it is fun for you to spell incorrectly and then they correct it like the teacher. Spellingcity.com is a good website as well.
Reading- Thanks again for having your child read to you at home. We will continue to do worksheets and workbook pages that go with the stories. The following skills are still being reinforced: vocabulary words, decoding strategies, summarizing, comprehension, sequencing, story characters, cause/effect relationships, alphabetical order, critical thinking skills, reviewing basic phonetic principles, and finding evidence in text to support answers. The class continues to be excited about AR reading and earning prizes.
Writing Activities- From time to time you may see a writing project come home. I am encouraging the class to write about particular topics. We have been talking about ideas to support the topic and to stay on the topic. Some students are still struggling to write complete sentences and sentences that do not start all the same way. Please go over the paper with your child and see how they are doing. It is important for them to write at least five sentences regarding one topic to be prepared for third grade.
Grammar/Writing- Verbs with singular and plural nouns, verbs for present, past, and future, sentence structure, beginning writing skills, using parts of a question to answer in a complete sentence. Ex- What did Anansi use to catch fish? Anansi used a net to catch fish.
Math- Understanding basic multiplication and division concepts using pictures and story problems, multiplication tables of 2, 5, and 10. At this point in the school year, students should be memorizing addition/subtraction facts and not using fingers and other “tricks” anymore. Please see what your child does at home and practice reciting facts as often as possible. Timed tests count towards their overall math grade. A car ride or even waiting for dinner is excellent time to practice. These skills are essential for what is ahead: 2-digit addition, addition/subtraction using mental math, 2-digit subtraction. These skills can be very difficult to master and need to be practiced as often as possible.
Science- Weather, water cycle, day and night, seasons
Social Studies- Using our environment
