2nd Grade News
November
Mrs. Shaughnessy
Here is a quick view of what we are working on in second grade:
Spelling/Phonics- Long e (ee,ea,y), Long o (o, oa, ow), compound words, long i (i, igh, y). I have noticed very high grades in spelling so keep up the practice at home! The students really seem to love using the Spelling City website. I have received lots of positive feedback.
Reading Skills- Vocabulary words, drawing conclusions, decoding strategies, summarizing, comprehension, sequencing, story characters, cause/effect relationships, critical thinking skills, using basic phonetic principles when reading, and improving fluency. Keep reading at home. It really does make a difference. The students love reading with a timer set. They like to reread the passage and see if they can read more by the time the timer goes off. Try it at home using the microwave/stove timer. It really helps to improve their fluency (speed of reading). At this time, they should be at or above 60 words per minute.
Grammar- verbs, verbs with singular and plural nouns, verbs for past, present, and future, beginning writing skills using evidence from text to support the main idea sentence, using graphic organizers, and publishing in paragraph form
Math- Bar Modeling using part, part, whole to solve story problems with addition and subtraction, how to multiply (repeated addition), how to divide (repeated subtraction), and using multiplication and division to solve story problems. We will continue doing two minute timed test so please keep practicing at home. I have seen improvement and lots of great grades so keep practicing!
Veteran’s Day Celebration- We will participate in the Veteran’s Day celebration on Friday, November 11 at 10:00 in the high school gym (please see Tiger Talk Newsletter for more information.). All are welcome to attend. Students who do not participate in the Veteran’s Day luncheon will need to bring a cold lunch with a drink to school that day. We will be eating in the classroom and will dismiss at 3:00.
No School- Wednesday, November 23-Friday 25 for Thanksgiving Break. Class resumes on Monday.
A big thank you for all the Halloween party volunteers! The class had a great time!
