January Newsletter 2nd Grade
Spelling/Phonics- We are starting with Unit 4, Wk. 1 words (-le), and continuing with vowel sound in book (u,oo), vowel sound in gown (ou, ow), vowel sound in joy (oi, oy), and vowel sound in moon (oo, ew, ui).
Reading- We started the second book in the series. Thanks again having your child read to you at home. We will continue to do worksheets and workbook pages that go with the stories. The following skills are still being reinforced: vocabulary words, decoding strategies, summarizing, comprehension, sequencing, story characters, vowel/consonant sounds, cause/effect relationships, alphabetical order, critical thinking skills, reviewing basic phonetic principles. The class continues to be excited about AR reading and earning prizes. Remember AR is not included in your child’s reading grade, but I do monitor progress often and makes changes accordingly.
Grammar- Nouns, verbs, adjectives, sentence structure, beginning writing skills
Math-Dividing using related multiplication facts, reviewing chapters 1-6, and metric measurement: measuring in meters, comparing lengths in meters, measuring in centimeters, comparing lengths in centimeters, and word problems using metric length. Please keep checking your child’s papers that come home because he/she may need to do corrections. These can be very difficult skills and need to be practiced very often at school and at home. We may do many papers together that will come home without a grade on them. When I believe we have sufficiently practiced, I will then take grades on papers. At this point in the school year, students should be memorizing addition/subtraction facts and not using fingers, other “tricks” anymore. Please see what your child does at home and practice reciting facts as often as possible. A car ride or even waiting for dinner is an excellent times to practice.
Social Studies- Goods and Services
Cold Weather- Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately and has an extra set of clothes at school in case he/she gets wet outside.
No School- Monday, January 19 in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
