2nd Grade News October
Mrs. Shaughnessy
Spelling/Phonics- contractions, words with er,ir,ur, adding s and es, long a using ai and ay
We will continue to have pretests on Thursdays and final tests on Fridays. It seems to be working well for the students. On my web page, there is spelling site students can use to practice spelling words: SpellingCity.com. If your child is absent on pretest day, the pretest is not made up. Your child just takes the final test when he/she returns.
Reading Book- Thank you for continuing to return the signed slips. Remember to have your child read the story and discuss it with you as well. Try to ask your child questions about what is being read. I am finding many students are reading well, but do not remember or comprehend what has just been read. The best way to remedy that is to consistently ask questions as you go. Your child should know what story we are working and can always go back or read ahead. Please make sure the reading book makes it back to school.
Reading Skills- Vocabulary words, decoding strategies, summarizing, comprehension, sequencing, story characters, cause/effect relationships, critical thinking skills, using basic phonetic principles when reading, improving fluency. We are highlighting the information (evidence) in the story (on worksheets) that led us to the correct answer and learning not to guess. AR Books- Students are continuing to read for prizes. Your child is welcome to check an AR book out of our library or classroom and take it home. A test can be taken on the book in our classroom and library.
Grammar/Writing- Nouns, proper nouns, singular/plural nouns, plural nouns that change spelling (child-children), possessive nouns, beginning writing skills using sequence, main idea and details, capital letters, correct punctuation, and evidence from text.
Math- Subtraction up to 1,000 with and without regrouping and subtraction across zeros. Using Bar Models with addition and subtraction: using part-part-whole in addition and subtraction, adding on and taking away sets, comparing two sets, real word problems using two steps Please keep going over math addition/subtraction facts to 20. We usually take 2-3 timed tests per week and they do count as half of a regular assignment grade.
Science- We are learning about what living things need, how plants make food, where seeds come from, how seeds look and grow, how plants are like their parents, and how plants survive in different places.
Conferences- These are held Thursday, October 16 and Friday, October 17. Early dismissal (11:30) on Thursday and no school on Friday.
*Halloween Party/Fall Festival- (taken directly from Tiger Talk)
Fall Festival
Elementary School Fall Festival Par-
ties will be held in the morning on Fri-
day, October 31st, which is a half
day of school. As with all school par-
ties, only parents who are signed up
for room parties should attend. If
you have treats, they may be sent to
school with your student or dropped
off in the office. The office will have
a list of names of parents who will be
attending and there will be a check in
table in the commons for parents to
get name tags before going to class-
rooms.
Since it is a half day of school, stu-
dents may wear their costumes to
school. Please follow these guidelines
the costume should be some-
thing they can wear on the bus
when selecting a costume for this
special day:
No makeup will be allowed with
the costume. Students will be
asked to wash off any makeup
if worn.
Costumes should be school ap-
propriate. Please no offensive
or disturbing costumes. No toy
weapons will be allowed, even if
it goes with the costume.
Children will wear their cos-
tumes to and from school
We will have a costume parade
through the gym and Parents are
more than welcome to come and
watch the parade by entering through
the gym doors by the parking lot. The
parade will begin at approximately
10:00. Once the parade is finished
and students are in classrooms, we
will open up the commons for parents
who are helping with the parties to
check in and go to classrooms
